I have been to LA a few times but always for work and never with enough time to explore the city beyond an LAX hotel. This trip I stayed a few extra days and played tourist. It was a short visit but a good one. I really liked what i saw and enjoyed what I did. I need to come back and spend more time here.

Chirag, Dr. David, Subodh and Jerry flew up to meet me and my parents in Maine to do some leaf-peeping. We spent some time in Augusta - the state capital. We drove up into the mountains to the little village of Rangeley where my family used to live. We also went to the coast - Dr. David and I to Camden with my parents and the Indians to Acadia National Park. I am always happy when my friends get to experience Maine. It's very special to me. So are they.

In October I visited Rome for the first time as part of a trip with my mother, Suzanne, Grant, and Daryl. We stayed right outside the Vatican City walls and spent a lot of time there. It was very special to be there at the center of the Catholic Church and so much history and beauty with my mother.

Congratulations to Grant for completing his degree at American University. Family and friends gathered in Mount Pleasant to wish him well. It was a fun celebration of a major milestone.

After a business trip to Brussels, my mother joined me and Miguel for some touristing in Belgium and then London. Miguel and Phillippe were great hosts at their home in Antwerp - as always. After some time in Belgium, Miguel, Ma and I took the Chunnel train to London. It was her first time in London. It was my first time there with her and with Miguel - which made it all new and interesting in a different way. We spent the days roaming the city and the nights - roaming the city - but without Ma - safely tucked in bed. It was a great week.

I spent ten cold December days in Beijing. It was my first visit to China and it was wonderful. You can feel the energy of change all around you. The people are so welcoming. The food is incredible. I was fortunate to make a few new friends and to practice and hang out with a swim team there. It was all very fun.

I went to Tokyo for work and decided to stay an extra week for vacation. I asked my mother if she wanted to join me there - expecting her to say no. She surprised me. We had a wonderful vacation together. I also got to spend two weeks visiting with a good friend, Shu. We met last year in Tokyo and have become good friends. He is a beautiful person.

Happy Birthday Tut...

Colby Museum 090, originally uploaded by dcjay64.

My father turned 71 today.

That is him in the pic above. I like this pic because I think it is the only one I have of him in a museum.

We do lots of things together, he and I, and always have. When I was a kid we did the outdoorsy stuff he loves. Ice fishing, sports stuff. Camping. Now when I am spending time up in Maine we watch TV together most nights after my mother has gone to bed. Always the Red Sox if they are on. Lately the HBO John Adams series, if they aren't on.

But this pic at the Colby Art Museum in Waterville was our first visit together to a museum - at least as far as I can remember. It was on a sunny but cold February day in central Maine.

I think he enjoyed the visit. I really did.

Happy Birthday!

Fun on the 4th in Columbia Heights - at Cardozo High...

073

That is the celebration outside my window tonight here in Columbia Heights.  I love it.

One of the reasons I moved to this part of Columbia Heights is the amazing view of the city.  I have long thought it is the best spot in the city to see the city - and fireworks over the mall.  And my neighbors know how to celebrate our Nation's birthday.

Tonight Jean, Mike and I walked around Columbia Heights soaking in the Independence Day atmosphere. Fireworks are legal here in DC and this part of Columbia heights does it up right.  The very unofficial fireworks display on my block started early (2 days ago) and went late (its still going on now after 11pm) and was at times more impressive than ones I have seen put on by cities.

Mike and me..

Here is a video clip of the activity on my block from my balcony...

Not bad.

We watched the official DC fireworks over the Mall from Malcolm X Park - with lots of my neighbors -including Daryl and his NYC visitors.  Here is a little taste...

I think we enjoyed the neighborhood fireworks from my balcony more.

Celebration in the Old Port...

Maine Feb '08 012

Tonight we took my mother out for a birthday dinner in Maine's dining and shopping and cultural center - Portland.

First we did some shopping and walking in the Old Port section of the city.  Beautiful old buildings and fun shops.

Happy Birthday Ma!

My mother was born 70 years ago today.  The pic above is one of my favorties of the two of us.  It is on the train from Brussels to London.  I think we are about to go into the Chunnel.

Who better than my mother to lean on?  You can tell from the pic I was happy.

Happy Anniversary to my parents - Moose & Dianne.

They were married 47 years ago today.  Wow.  That is really amazing and I am really fortunate to have them both - and both together - as my parents.  I know it.

The pic above is one of my favorites of them. We were in Oslo, Norway. It was one of the very few times we could pry my father out of Maine to go on a trip with us. This trip was to visit the country, town, and family that had hosted me as an exchange student in high school, so it was very special.

I like how in the pic they look so happy and so happy together.  They remind me of two pieces of a puzzle that fit so nicely with each other.

The line at the top of this post is from the song - Save the last dance for me.  I am pretty sure it was their "courting" song.  The song came out in 1960 - shortly before they wed.  The Drifters took it to #1 on the charts that year.

I can't hear this song without picturing the two of them jitterbugging to it.  That is what they do when it plays.

As a tribute to their marriage, here are the lyrics...

You can dance
Ev'ry dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye
Let him hold you tight

You can smile
Ev'ry smile for the man who held your hand
'Neath the pale moonlight

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Oh, I know (oh, I know)
That the music's fine
Like sparkling wine
Go and have your fun

Laugh and sing
But while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Baby, don't you know
I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you oh, so much

You can dance (you can dance)
Go and carry on
'Til the night is gone
And it's time to go

If he asks if you're all alone
Can he take you home you must tell him no

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's you're gonna be
So, darlin', save the last dance for me

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's your gonna be
So, darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Save the last dance for me, mmmm-hummmm
Save the last dance for me, mmmm

Nothing says "Be My Valentine" like Chili Cheese Fries...

009

Tonight Jean and I decided to celebrate this holiday of the heart with a meal that is not so heart friendly - Chili dog, chili burger, cheese fries, and milk shakes at Ben's Chili Bowl.

Ben's is a Washington, DC institution and is just a couple blocks from my house.

002

I had walked by it about a week ago and have not been able to get the picture of a chili dog out of my mind ever since.  I have been craving one.

And here I am with my dog.

And here is Jean, with a definite look of gleeful anticipation, looking at the menu. 004

and a couple more pics from Valentine's Dinner...

Lunar New Year in DC's Chinatown...

019

092

Fun, fun, fun.

It wasn't a huge parade.  For the US, it's not a big Chinatown (it's dismissively known as chinaBLOCK).  But it was a very fun New Year parade in downtown DC today.

Several very cool dragons were weaving their way down and around 7th street.

As interesting to me as the colorful dragons, were the people bringing them to life - underneath.  These are great performers - athletes and artists.  I wanna do THAT!

Here are a few more highlights - Hillary (the DC primary is Tuesday), Handsome (well, it starts with H), and Hooters (Yes - even in Chinatown)...

Happy Lunar New Year...

Lunar year Of The Rat, originally uploaded by nsgoh.

Thursday is the start of the new lunar year. The year of the Rat.

Happy New Year to all my friends who celebrate the lunar new year.

The Rat was welcomed in ancient times as a protector and bringer of material prosperity. It is the first of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar.

The Rat is associated with aggression, wealth, charm, and order, yet also associated with death, war, the occult, pestilence, and atrocities.

2007: The Year in People...

Calendar2007[1]

For me, looking back at 2007 means reflecting on moments and memories that are defined by interesting and wonderful people. To wind down this year, I have created a month by month sampling of some, certainly not all, of those people and memories.

JANUARY

I started this blog in January. I also started the months long process of deciding whether to sell my house and move - and then doing it. Atul, my friend and real estate agent, guided me through every step of it successfully. Very successfully. And I suspect I am a high-maintenance client. This pic is during a donut break while house-hunting.

FEBRUARY

In February, Deanna made the first of several visits this year to my parents’ house in Augusta, Maine. Her stays with us are a real treat. We have enjoyed her especially this year. She slips into the family flow with an ease that comes from two decades of friendship. Knitting is a focus of our time with my parents in Maine and this pic is shows her giving a newly finished sock to my mother.

MARCH

Hints of springtime can come early in DC. It is the best time of year in the city. When the weather starts to warm up and the flowers and trees begin to bloom, I love to be out in the neighborhoods with friends. Often like in this pic, in Dupont with Sean and Michael. I could spend hours just gabbing and people watching with them. Luckily, I do.

APRIL

Ok, so this pic is not a person, but for me it has enormous life and personality. In April, I spent my last day and night on Kenyon Street in Mount Pleasant. I had lived there for 7 years. Leaving was difficult and emotional but right and good for me. I still drive by periodically to get a peek at her. I can tell the new owners are taking very good care of the ol’ gal.

MAY

On May 1 I moved 10 blocks to Columbia Heights. I love my new place – the building (killer views), apartment life (no responsibilities), the neighbors (all very cool), the location (steps to trendy U street). Most fortunately, my new home is just a few blocks from both Suz & Grant and Daryl. Daryl is part of any home for me. Here he is on my balcony with Columbia Heights and the way to his house behind him.

JUNE

Gay pride month. Unlike my friends in Canada and Belgium and England, where gay couples can get married or at least have all the same rights, in this country we are still fighting for basic civil rights (marriage equality, employment protection, etc.). This pic is of one of my favorite couples – Dr. David and David – one afternoon during Pride week in DC. They are both from Colombia and I want to go there with them soon. Maybe in 2008!

JULY

My father, known affectionately as either Moose or Tut, turned 70 in July of this year. He is the essence of Maine – appreciates nature, works hard, big Red Sox & Patriots fan. He rarely even leaves the state. Why would he? Maine really does have so much to offer. The pic below is from his birthday surprise party and is with me, my brother & sister, and his sister. It was a great celebration of him.

Tut & Mary & Kids.JPG

AUGUST

Hot, steamy, sweaty DC. Yum. During the past year I have really gotten back into cycling. That is thanks in large part to Vijay – who often picks me up and carts me out to the ‘burbs for a long and scenic ride. I love the whole experience. The ride. The friendship. The big breakfast after the ride. The pic below is of us after a 25 mile ride and 5 mile run. In August. Fun.

SEPTEMBER

A very difficult month for my family. We found out my mother has mesothelioma – a rare form of cancer. She spent much of the month in the hospital or with doctors and specialists as we got more and more information about her condition. She is the mother every son wants, especially a gay one. My friends around the world all adore her. The pic below is my brother, sister and me with her in the hospital in Portland. Like the picture, she is the center of our family and we are with her every step of the way in her fight against cancer.

OCTOBER

Autumn is my favorite time of year. Back to school and all. Finally the heat breaks in DC. It can even get cold enough to bring out the woolens! Deanna’s visits to Maine (see February) inspired me to start knitting again. The hat that Jean is wearing in the pic below is my first one. He has a big heart and I knew he would love it even with its many, many mistakes.

NOVEMBER

This month is all about Suz and Grant. They were married in DC in November. It was beautiful. They are building a wonderful partnership and life together and it was so much fun to celebrate their bliss with their loved ones. The pic below is a real favorite – with my family and friends gathered at my place to toast my sister and her husband (to be).

DECEMBER

The end of the year means home for the holidays. And for me, nothing says home more than family. Here we are. Just last week. It really is a high point of the year in my family. I think we do Christmas right – the focus is on quality time with each other. I guess we can thank our parents for that. They always did and continue to make this time of year very special.

Christmas Daryl 2007 331

That was 2007.  As I say often, I think I am the luckiest guy in the world.

I am looking forward to 2008 with these people and others.
