Aurelius Augustinus, Augustine of Hippo, or Saint Augustine (November 13, 354 – August 28, 430)
That's one of my favorite travel quotes. And from someone who lived in a time when travel could not have been too easy or too common.
We are both Scorpios.
He was one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity - considered to be one of the church fathers.
Born in present day Algeria as the eldest son of Saint Monica, he was educated in North Africa and baptized in Milan. My favorite Catholic church here in DC is St. Augustine’s. It’s the "the mother church of african american catholics in the nation's capital".
Augustine was the outstanding figure in philosophy between the time of Plato and Thomas Aquinas, a period of 1600 years (and including the lives of Aristotle, Zeno, Epicurus, Cicero, Plutarch, and Marcus Aurelius). His works—including The Confessions, which is often called the first Western autobiography—are still read around the world.
There is a pic of Saint Augustine below and another quote by him that I also liked. There is also a pic of St. Augustine's Church here in DC. All three found on flickr.
