Yes, the country General Store is still alive and kicking in rural Maine - and yes, Hussey's - a local landmark - really is the ultimate in One-Stop shopping. You can find it all at the corner of Routes 32 and 105 in the very tiny town of Windsor.
My mother and I stopped at Hussey's to pick up some polish sausage to go with the New England baked beans my brother made for dinner. I needed proof that you really can get both a wedding gown AND a shot gun at the same store - along with a cold brewskie. Indeed, in Windsor, Maine - you can in fact get all three at the same store. You can get so much more too!
The woman in the wedding gown "department" even took me into the back room where all the newer dresses are kept. I guess she thought I would appreciate more than just the "last season" dresses on display to the general public. Interestingly, the guy in the gun department did not even say hi to me. Hmm...
Quick historical sidetrack/footnote going out to my friend Marco in Malta...
Apparently, the tiny town of Windsor (population was 2,204 at the 2000 census) was formerly known as Malta, and gave its name to the "Malta War", a minor rebellion against the Massachusettes state government in Boston over settlement and land ownership rights in the first decade of the 1800s.
Moving on...here are a couple pics from our very traditional (usually on Saturday nights) New England baked bean supper. Beans. Sausage. Brown bread. Mike and M-S had the whole spread for us.
Earlier in the day, I went to see the Maine State Music Theater production of Grand Hotel.
It was at the Pickard Theater on the Bowdoin College campus. I really enjoyed it. Moose and Dianne did not. According to them, the buzz at intermission was mostly negative.
What I found almost as interesting as the show, was the crowd at the Thursday (2pm) matinee. I think i was the only person there in the near sellout crowd that was under 70 years old.
So much to do in Central Maine. I love it.
I love that place!

My friend actually bought her wedding dress there!!! That's the best- I can't wait to check it out. One of my favorite Maine things is being able to buy pizza almost everywhere-- every gas station with food and most country stores--- did they have it at Hussey's?
