Growing up in small town Augusta, I spent a lot of time at the local YMCA.
As a younger child, I played basketball there. My best friend's father was my coach and I played on a team with the son of one of my mother's good friends from childhood. I splashed around at open swim sessions at the Y and even went to overnight slumber parties in the gym.
I have vivid memories from the Y. Some of the most vivid are of just creeping around the old building, which seemed large and kind of maze-like. A little spooky. When I was a kid, there were actually people, men, living at the Y. Up on the 3rd floor. Some friends and I would dare each other to sneak up into the dorms without getting caught.
That was the old YMCA. Fast forward to the pic below. That is the new YMCA. As I have been spending a lot of time up here in Augusta, I have been getting to know the new Y. It opened about a year ago.
The new Y is a great facility. I swim there a couple times a week. I have done spinning classes and pilates and aerobics. I love the pilates class. It is usually just me and a woman in her 60s.
Interestingly, in the locker room at the new Y, I often bump into a friend I have known since 6th grade. He is married and has a couple kids and lives in the area. He actually is one of the friends that used to sneak around the dorm rooms at the old Y with me. Kinda fun.
Not so fun is that I also often end up showering with my high school math teacher. Eww.
The old Y building looks beautiful
