Today was 7th annual Augusta Maine Chili and Chowder Challenge.
Sarah and I could not pass that up. How could we? 18 restaurants competing for the honor of the best chili and chowder in the capital city! I did not even know there are 18 restaurants in Augusta.
The Challenge was at the Augusta Armory. Back in the day, that is where all the BIG EVENTS in Augusta were held. Concerts. Conferences. I think the last time I was there was for a cub scout jamboree of some sort. Maybe a Christmas craft fair.
We got there late. 7 minutes before closing. Oopsie. But they let us in for free and we were still able to wolf down a hot dog and samples of several chilis. I did not try the chowders. Wasn't in the mood for chowder.
First, we tried the Chili from Lisa's Restaurant on Bangor Street. They handed us a cup and said - "vote for us for hottest chili". Umm, yeah. It was hot. Inedibly so. Whoa. I like my chili hot, but you kinda need to be able to eat it.
We also tried some from Damons. That one was good, but really - it tasted like sloppy joe mix in a dixie cup. I ate it all anyway.
My favorite chili was from...drumroll please..
Tim Hortons. Yes, the Canadian coffee shop chain makes the best chili in Augusta. I have a coupon for a free cup o' chili there - if anyone wants it.
