The shift from Mayan villages to the colonial capital has been interesting. A little jarring.
Antigua is so beautiful but in a different way than Zunil and Xela and Momostenango. Antigua’s beauty is not a natural one – it is a built one. Built in the 16th & 17th & 18th centuries. And rebuilt. The city was more than a couple times destroyed by earthquakes. But it is still beautiful.
The pic above is me having lunch looking over the ruins of the Cathedral.
Today we spent the day just roaming the streets of Antigua. Ok, there was a lot of sitting and people watching and eating and drinking too. The perfect vacation day!
Here are my Five Favorite Fotos from today...
Nature...

This flower had bloomed at the ruins of the Santa Clara church and convent. Though the church was destroyed in the late 1700s by an earthquake, nature found a way to give it back some life.
Beauty...

Colonial colors are wonderful. The yellow and white of the Merced Monastery are intense.
Fun...

Come on, what’s more fun than titty fountains?! I thought that this fountain in the main square was very cheeky for a Spanish colony in the 1700s!.
Spirit...

These arches were also at the Santa Clara ruins. Despite (or because of) their nakedness, they are still striking with an energy that helps you see the church that was once there.
Just liked it...

Oh, you know I was gonna go back to the Mayan women. I can’t stop taking snaps. .
