Antigua. We have made it to our final stop in Guatemala. It is stunning. The pic above is the cathedral just after the sun set. We’ll check out the inside tomorrow – and lots more too.
Today we left Lake Atitlan (at 630am) and made our way here with stops in some important Mayan spots along the way. I have to say it was a bit sad leaving all our great experiences in the Mayan villages behind.
But now we are in the colonial capital city and here are my Five Favorite Fotos from today...
Nature...
Iximche is an ancient Mayan capital that is now in ruins. It sits on a bluff and is surrounded by pine trees. I am not sure what impressed me the most – the ruins, the silence, or the green grass and trees. Probably the combination.
Beauty...

Our hotel in Antigua is an old colonial palacio that has been stunningly preserved. Architecture really can be beautiful. Our room looks out to the Cathedral and volcano and in to this courtyard.
Fun...
Pollo Campero. Guatemalan fast food. There is one just a few blocks from me in Columbia Heights but I have never been. Tonight Jean and I skipped over a multitude of trendy restaurants and went for a Guatemalan original.
Spirit...
The Shrine of Pascual Abaj – the Mayan earth god. It is hundreds – maybe thousands of years old. It still stands on a hill above Chichicastenango – our first stop today.
Just liked it...
Me and Tomas. He is Mayan and a local. He herded us up the volcano yesterday and took us around his part of the highlands today. He was a great guide and shared a lot about Mayan culture and his own family history.
And more photos here at my Flickr account.
Wow, love the cathedral photo and the photo of the crosses. Very nice!
