That was pretty much my day here in Guatemala.
Jean and I (and Thomas our guide) hiked to the top of the San Pedro volcano today. It was a wee bit harder than I was expecting. Maybe this was not the ideal starter hike for someone who has not hiked a mountain since cub scouts.
San Pedro, behind us in the pic above, is just over 3000m (i.e. just under 2 miles) tall. For those of you in Maine – that is nearly 2x as high as Mount Katahdin.
The hike itself was “only” a mile (straight up). But the base of the volcano is already 1 mile above sea level so it was kind of like climbing Mount Katahdin but starting from the top of Mount Katahdin.
Bottom-line. We were sucking wind. Bad. We literally had to stop every few minutes to catch our breath.
But we made it. And it was excellent. And I am really glad we did it. And don’t ask me to go hiking with you anytime soon.
And here are my Five Favorite Fotos from today...
Nature...
When I could actually breath, I did try to soak in the volcanic flora and fauna.
Beauty...
I am not lying - all I could think of during the entire hike was getting back to the lake and having some guatemalan cervezas. They were gorgeous.
Fun...
One of the best parts of the day and of our whole stay here on Lake Atitlan has been the boat rides shared with locals and other tourists.
Spirit...
From the top all we could see was the deep blue of the water, the light blue of the sky, the green of the mountains, and little dollops of white clouds. Amazing.
Just liked it...

The top. Hot. Sweaty. But very happy.
