Today was our last day in the Quetzaltenango area and we made the most of it.
Byron (who drove us from Guatemala City up to here) picked us up early in the morning and guided us on visits to a couple more highland villages and the volcanic hot springs at Fuentes Georginas. Jean and I are soaking up the minerals in the pic above.
And here are my Five Favorite Fotos from the rest of today...
Nature...

My father asked me this morning what kinds of trees they have here. Lots of pines - just like Maine. Here they play a big part in religious ceremonies and local customs. I snapped these pines while we were driving up the side of the Zunil volcano.
Beauty...
We came upon real beauty at the end of our day - sunset just after we arrived at Lake Atitlan. That is the San Pedro volcano - one of three on the lake. Much more tomorrow - once we really start exploring.
Fun...

OK, this probably wasn't really the most fun of the day - but I was a little surprised when my pina colada showed up in full pineapple drag. But wait - there was more. The waiter came back and stuck a sparkler in it. Then he stuck another one in and brought it over to the guy at the next table to take a pic of it. I eventually got it back and finished it.
Spirit...

This is a local woman asking for the help of the Mayan deity San Simon. She is wanting to deal with the other woman having an affair with her husband. Really. It's very serious stuff and we were lucky to participate (well watch) in Zunil. We chatted with her friends while she was making the offerings.
Just liked it...

I can't get enough of the markets here in the Highlands. And of the women who seem to have the best outfits and do all the work.
And more photos here at my Flickr account.
