We are starting our first Ecuador vacation in a small town, Otavalo, high (>1.5 miles) in the Andes. We wanted to start somewhere relaxing with both natural sights and also cultural attractions. Otavalo has it all – as we started discovering today.
We got here at 2am so “slept in”. Kinda. After breakfast we did a quick spin around the town to orient ourselves then hired a car and guide to take us to some of the sights outside of town. The tour was pretty much all in Spanish. Ok for Jean. A bit of a struggle for me. Don’t expect a lot of detail here.
We visited Laguna Cuicocha (Guinea Pig Lake?) which is a nature preserve and very clean. The lake is a volcano hole and there is another volcano on the shore. The pic above is of us both on the Lake. From there we went to Cotacachi – the center of leather making artisans. I got a nice belt. We had a great lunch. From there we went to another nature preserve of sorts – where they save and rehabilitate birds of prey in the area. Very cool. From there to another nature preserve – the Cascada de Peguche. Mystical waters. We ended by visiting a local family of weavers. Jean picked up a couple nice scarfs.
It was a full and fun first day. And here are my Five Favorite Fotos from today...
